America Is...
Charlotte Rostad, Rapid City, South Dakota

WASHINGTON: The majestic rocks, the sturdy trees are symbols of the American people. They have withstood hard Winters and Summers of draught and dust storms. The American people have sharpened their skills to survive.
America is truth and strength!

JEFFERSON: We are a caring and generous people. A cry comes out from our land or a devastated country. We respond the American way to their need. We are a land of plenty.
America is Life and Love!

ROOSEVELT: As a bomber thunders over us it wakes us to remind us of our freedom. We are wrapped up in the safety and protection of our Armed Forces. Our flag waves high!
America is Liberty and Freedom!

LINCOLN: My eyes are dimmed but the beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota will never fade from my memory. The season's changing colors brings to mind the different colored skins welcomed to share and join in admiration of this land.
America is Beauty and Happiness!

I believe in America - I am an American!

Second Place Prize: Mt. Rushmore Prestige Coin Set

Four Presidents in Memoriam
Arthur L. Oakes, Hermosa, South Dakota

GEORGE WASHINGTON
We have fought, our freedom's foe
And left behind for those to know
A Republic for which this nation stands
To stand for freedom in all the lands

THOMAS JEFFERSON
Vigilance eternal is the price we pay.
With blood and honor, to this very day.
For freedom's cost, some give their all,
When first they hear, sweet freedom's call.
For freedom's cost is often high,
That others live, so many die.

THEODORE ROOSEVELT
From azure blue to gold and green,
Let's keep God's work, that it be seen,
By all who love these beauteous lands
The work and majesty from God's hands.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
God save our union of these good states,
And bless us once more, with glorious fates.
For brothers fought and mothers wept,
That this union would be kept.

Third Place Prize: Mt. Rushmore Silver Dollar and Half Dollar Coin Set

If they could speak, they would say...
Sabina Wells, Douglas Middle School, Box Elder, South Dakota
Teacher: Mrs. Catherine Dimock

President Washington would say,"I believe this country has grown since I was here! Being on Mount Rushmore is probably the biggest honor I have been given. There are no longer wars against states. People are no longer dying of hunger, frost bite, and other horrible deaths. There is fresh air and not the smell of gun powder when you wake up in the morn'. This country has truly become a wonderful place to live and grow up. I hope this country stays like this forever." George Washington

President Jefferson would say "I believe writing the Declaration of Independence helped this country greatly. From what I see, I think there has been many changes. There are no longer wars like there were in my days. Like George said, it is a great honor to be on Mount Rushmore." Thomas Jefferson

President Lincoln would say, "I'm glad to be back here. I'm happy to see the honor of the men who fought in the Civil War, happy to see that people honor me for a little speech I made. This truly is a great country, I hope it stays like this forever. Like they said, being on Mount Rushmore is probably the greatest honor, it is greater than being president." Abraham Lincoln

President Roosevelt would say, "I'm very happy to be here today, and to see what the world has come to since I was around. I'm happy to see people are allowing women to work. I hope this nation stays this way. I'm happy to see that the United States of America is trying to stop wars in other countries of the world. I still can't believe that a cute little gift to me, a Teddy Bear, has had such an impact on this world. Like the others it truly is a honor to be on Mount Rushmore and I hope it lasts forever." Teddy Roosevelt

That is what I think they would say. These people did a huge amount to help to this country. I'm happy to see that the state of South Dakota honored them so well.

Fourth Place Prize: Mt. Rushmore Silver Dollar

Washington: How Proud He Is
Brittney Renée Eichler, Newell, SD

If George Washington could talk, he might say that he was very proud that we still have presidents. He might say that he was proud of us because we were still a country. He might say that he was glad that we were still free. He might say that he was unhappy because of all the problems we have.

Fifth Place Prize: Mt. Rushmore Half Dollar

Waskell News: Theodore Roosevelt Back from the Dead!
Wynter Martinez, Hillbrook School, Los Gatos, California
Teacher Waskell

I went over to Mt. Rushmore where apparently a tour group was video taping, and noticed that Theodore Roosevelt (statue) was talking. All that he said was "eu, ee, eu, ah, ah, ting, tang, walla, walla, bing, bang". What does this mean? Could it be some kind of code sent from some other life form? Could it just have been an illusion? We do not know what this was or how it happened, but we are investigating further.
